British Blind Sport research report “Overcoming Barriers to Participation” highlighted that one of the 6 key barriers that visually impaired (VI) people face is “Awareness”. They reported finding it difficult to know where to find opportunities local to them.
To overcome this barrier, British Blind Sport want to make it easier than ever for VI people and their support networks to find a wide range of activities on their doorstep. Following discussions with other VI charities, it is accepted that there is a need and these partners would find this useful and refer users to this tool.
Through the BBS Activity Finder, British Blind Sport aim to:
- Be the go to place for info about visually impaired sports and physical activities in the UK. We want to provide a wide range of activities across the UK.
- Showcase activities that feel able to support VI people and provide great experiences, activities that VI People can be confident in.
- Change the perceptions of what activities people think are possible for people with a VI. We believe any activity can be adapted to include VI people.
- Make all information fully accessible for users, as with all of BBS’ communications.
We think that all sports clubs and physical activity sessions should be open and welcoming for visually impaired people. Whether you have lots of VI participants already and looking for more, or you’re starting from scratch, register your activities now here. If you still aren’t sure, that’s OK! Check out our helpful FAQs document for more info, explore our educational resources more info on including VI people or get in touch with a member of the BBS team.
