The Health Service Overview

The Structure of the NHS in England

Department of Health (DH)

The Department of Health has overall responsibility for health and social care in England.   NHS bodies in England are not part of DH but do have a close relationship.  NHS Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs) are directly accountable to DH and the NHS Chief Executive has a direct management line to SHA Chief Executives within the NHS in England.  Almost all NHS funding is directly allocated by DH to Primary care trusts (PCTs).

The work of the Department of Health centres around three strategic objectives.

- Better health and well-being for all: helping people stay healthy and well; empowering people to live independently; and tackling health inequalities.

- Better care for all: the best possible health and social care that offers safe and effective care, when and where people need it; and empowering people in their choices.

- Better value for all: delivering affordable, efficient and sustainable services; contributing to the wider economy and the nation.

The Department of Health manages the health and social care system at a national level, click here to find out more information, in respect to how primary and secondary NHS care work together with social care providers to deliver care locally.

East of England Strategic Health Authority (SHAs)

NHS East of England was established as the Strategic Health Authority for the East of England, covering Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

NHS East of England is the regional headquarters of the NHS, and provides strategic leadership to all NHS organisations across the six counties. It is ultimately accountable to the Secretary of State for Health.
