Introduction

What is a school club link? School/club links aim to create many opportunities for young people to compete inside and outside of school.

School/club links are an agreement between a school and a community-based sports club to:

  • Work together
  • Meet the needs of young people
  • Provide new and varied opportunities
  • Help in realising ambitions

There are lots of benefits for both schools and clubs if they have a good link with each other, clubs can get more children attending the club because they have been taught more about the sport at school and recognise there is a club close to where people live. A club may also gain the chance to use equipment or facilities from the school. For a school the benefits are that the children will be more active, and also give the school more awareness from the community.

School-club links involve an agreement between the two parties, with specific targets and objectives. For example, the club may be expected to provide qualified coaches for a designated block of sessions, whilst the school may be expected to put on an after-school club in the specific sport.

In general the aims and objectives of creating new school-club links are to:

  • Promote links between the school and a quality community club
  • Provide high quality and additional opportunities for young people to participate in sport both inside and outside school
  • Provide opportunities for the club to present its programmes to possible new members in the school
  • Provide opportunities for the school to increase its role in the local community and to engage with people across all ages
  • Help young people to realise their ambitions

Effective school-club links should be reciprocal and benefit all parties.
