Peterborough SportsAid

Peterborough SportsAid was formed in 2004 and focussed on giving youngsters aged 12 to 18 and those of all ages for disabled sport to help with costs such as travel, training, accommodation competition fees and equipment. Although part of the national charity SportsAid, Peterborough SportsAid Committee has special agreement that all funds raised will be for the exclusive use of Peterborough youngsters and not absorbed into the national account.

Since 2004 Peterborough SportsAid has awarded grants in excess of £100,000 to over 200 young sportspeople and from over 30 sports from athletics to water skiing.

The Peterborough SportsAid Committee is:

Over the years Peterborough has welcomed an array of sports stars to its fundraising events, largely the Lunch Clubs which are held quarterly. Each lunch provides an opportunity to raise money for the charity and features a guest speaker who has achieved an elite level in their chosen sport. Previous guest speakers include:


  • Legendary commentator John Motson, accompanied by footballer Ricky George
  • Barney Storey – Paralympic Cyclist
  • Gareth Chilcott – former Rugby Union prop for England and Bath
  • Iwan Thomas – Former Olympic and World Championship Sprinter
  • Dean Richards – Former England and British and Irish Lions rugby star


  • David Duckham – former England Rugby Union player
  • POSH legends John Cozens, Dave Llewelyn and Tommy Robson
  • Martin Corry – Rugby World Cup Winner Martin Corry
  • John Peake – Hockey Olympic medalist and Olympic Torch bearer
  • Sandie Lister – International Hockey player
  • Chris Holmes – multi-medal winning Paralympic Swimmer and Head of the Paralympic Integration for London 2012.
  • Louise Hazel – Commonwealth Games Gold medal winning Heptathlete


  • Alex Wood-Davis – International Netballer
  • Ellen Falkner –  Commonwealth Games Bowls Champion
  • Sean Kerly – Olympic Gold medal winning Hockey player


  • Mark Foster – Olympic and World Championship Swimmer
  • Geoff Miller – former England Cricketer and Selector
  • Graham Bell – World Cup and Olympic Skier


  • Hannah MacLeod – Rio Olympic Gold medal winning Hockey player
  • Lauren Steadman – Rio Paralympics Silver medal winning Para-triathlete

Peterborough SportsAid has supported a good range of local athletes over the years, perhaps most famous amongst them gymnast Louis Smith and heptathlete Louise Hazel and Paralympian Lauren Steadman. Below is an introduction to a few more of the local athletes supported:

  • Alex Whyte & Lewis Hook – Peterborough Phantoms Ice Hockey Players who have both represented Great Britain Under 18s Ice Hockey team in the World Championships
  • James Fox – World Championship and World Cup and Rio Olympic winning City of Peterborough Rowing Club member, in the LTA4+ category
  • Jonathan Atkinson – canoeist
  • Lewis Barton – a bronze medal winning athlete in the National Disability Sports Games
  • Ollie Moore – Water skier
  • Robert Sayer – Peterborough Town Cricket Club and Huntingdonshire County player who has been a part of the Leicestershire CCC Academy and Under 19 England Development Programme
  • Zachary Cox – junior tennis player
