Thank you to everyone who recently completed our Volunteer Training and Development Survey 2017. With this survey, was part of Volunteer: Important People, we want to identify the training needs and scale of volunteering within local sports clubs in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
The survey opened on 8th April and closed 9th May 2017. We had 76 responses from 73 different clubs across 35 different sports which managed to give us a wide variety of feedback for us to work with.
Did you know…
- 75% of the clubs run purely on volunteers (no paid staff), while 25% did have some paid staff.
Volunteering needs within clubs
- 75% of clubs said they needed more volunteers. 53% of them are looking for longer term roles such as committee members, while 22% are looking for short term volunteers such as event staff.
- The most popular roles required are coaches or leaders significantly (35%). Then other roles such as Welfare Officers, Team Coordinators and Captain roles. However there are a wide range of required roles such as groundsmen, committee members, coordinator roles, refreshments, and marketing.
Attracting and retaining their volunteers
- Clubs could tick as many responses as they wanted on this question. We had 122 answers to this.
- 61% (74) recruit their volunteers in house, with members volunteering into roles as vacancies arise, while only 1 % (1) advertise externally. 7% (8) recruit according to the skills needed, while 29% (35) just accept help where they can.
- The most popular formal reward/ thanks for volunteers was offering training, ad hoc and formally, followed by paying for expenses. The least popular methods were incentives and rewards.
- When asked what works well, clubs mainly suggested formal training and courses. Other suggestions included free sessions, match fees, awards dinner places etc and demonstrating appreciation – thank you’s and certificates (V:IP Award Nomination).
What support is required?
- Clubs would most like support on recruiting and retaining volunteers, either formally or informally. Followed by managing volunteers and Legal requirements associated with volunteers – this mainly informally.
- Ways to support volunteers highlighted that raising funds, coach development, first aid, equality and marketing and promotion. Areas with the least support required were around facility management, website development, event management, databases and online tools.
- Volunteers would be mainly available during the evenings for training opportunities with weekends and online training (29% and 25% respectively).
