Sports Awards Nominations Open - Sept 09

LIVING SPORT has partnered with BBC Radio Cambridgeshire and Cambridge News to host the County’s Sports Awards.  Nominations are now open until 5 October.  Anyone can nominate the clubs and schools, sporting stars and unsung heroes who are an inspiration to others through their outstanding contribution to sport in the community.

Winners will be announced at the Awards Dinner on Thursday 12 November at the Huntingdon Marriot Hotel with special guest, England Rugby Star, Rory Underwood.

There are nine awards including Kitsports Sports Performer, Anglia Ruskin Disabled Sports Performer and the Huntingdonshire Regional College Young Sports Performer. Volunteers will be rewarded with Services to Sport and Barracudas Activity Day Camps Young Community Volunteer, as well as Coach of the Year and Community Club (Amateur).  Schools will be recognised with the Sport Connect School of the Year Award.

The final category is the new Power of Sport award which will be presented to the project that has made a real impact on the local community through sport, by addressing the needs of young people or under-represented groups,  and demonstrates the ‘power of sport’  to change lives.

Rory Underwood said ‘the Sports Awards are a great way of recognising the hard work that goes on behind the scenes at sports clubs across the county and rewarding the skill and dedication of our top performers. If you know someone who deserves appreciation and acknowledgement for their role in sport, please nominate them now.‘

All winners go forward to the BBC East Sports Awards. Last year's Sports Personality and Disabled Personality Awards went to Olympic heroes Louis Smith, who won bronze on the pommel horse in Beijing, and Fran Williamson, who won silver and bronze in the pool at the Paralympics.

Nomination forms are available at local sporting venues or from www.livingsport.co.uk, www.bbc.co.uk/Cambridgeshire  or www.cambridge-news.co.uk  For more details contact Rebecca Gilbertson, LIVING SPORT Events Coordinator on 01487 849929 or rebecca.gilbertson@livingsport.co.uk
