March Town Ladies Hockey Club was about to collapse but thanks to LIVING SPORT they are able to play again. The Club desperately needed a qualified coach to deliver training sessions to improve player’s skills and encourage new members to join the Club, but they did not have the money to train Anne Whittome who wanted to become their coach.
Three years ago March had a vibrant ladies section and regularly fielded three teams but last year this dropped to two and the first team was relegated. March was struggling to turn their fortunes around.
Anna applied to LIVING SPORT for funding through East-links: Leading the Field to access a Level 2 Hockey Coaching Qualification. Anna said ‘Without the funding, I would not have been able to undertake the course. It’s improved my technical knowledge, delivery techniques and confidence and I’m now able to deliver quality, progressive training sessions for the ladies and junior sections of the club. We plan to get back to our winning ways soon!’
Helen Clarke, Workforce Projects Co-ordinator at LIVING SPORT commented, ‘Anna’s commitment to the club, energy and motivation are clear. It was an easy decision to select Anna to benefit from the project. People like Anna make community sport readily available, developing the qualifications of these people is the main aim of the East-links: Leading the Field project.’
If you are interested in training or playing for March Town Hockey Club, all training is held at Neale Wade astro: Ladies on Thursdays 7.30pm to 9pm, Junior (U13’s) Thursdays 6.30pm to 7.30pm and Men on Tuesdays between 7.30pm and 9pm.
Notes to Editors:
Anna accessed her coaching through East-links: Leading the Field which runs across the eastern region. In Cambridgeshire this is administered by LIVING SPORT and Cambridge Regional College. East-links: Leading the Field will run until 31 December 2010. This ground-breaking new project offers fully-funded training courses for individuals who are employed or regularly volunteer in the sport and active leisure sector. Managed by ACER (the Association of Colleges in the Eastern Region) and delivered by County Sport Partnerships, further education colleges and National Governing Bodies of Sport, the project will offer the opportunity to access sport and active leisure qualifications that are 100% funded.
