LIVING SPORT has partnered with BBC Radio Cambridgeshire and Cambridge News to host the County’s Sports Awards. Winners will be announced at the Awards Dinner on Thursday 12 November at the Huntingdon Marriot Hotel.
A new award this year is the Matthew Warn Power of Sport Award for the project that has made a real impact on the local community by addressing the needs of young people or under-represented groups, and demonstrates the ‘power of sport’ to change lives. The Award will be presented in the name of Matthew Warn the Deputy Head at Norwood Primary School, Peterborough, who died suddenly in August.
Matthew was a keen sportsman who knew how sport helps young people from deprived and challenging backgrounds live more fulfilling lives. He worked tirelessly with pupils at his previous school, Gladstone Primary School, Peterborough, in one of the most deprived areas in the country, to take them through to the Kwik Cricket national finals in 2003 at Trentbridge.
Nine awards will be presented during the evening including Kitsports Sports Performer, Anglia Ruskin Disabled Sports Performer and the Huntingdonshire Regional College Young Sports Performer. Volunteers will be rewarded with BBC Radio Cambridgeshire Services to Sport and Barracudas Activity Day Camps Young Community Volunteer, as well as Cambridge News Coach of the Year and Advance Performance Community Club (Amateur). Schools will be recognised with the Sport Connect School of the Year Award.
Special guest Rory Underwood, the famous England Rugby star said ‘the Sports Awards are a great way of recognising the hard work that goes on behind the scenes at sports clubs across the county and rewarding the skill and dedication of our top performers. It is all about team work.” During his playing career Underwood scored 49 tries for England and played for Leicester Tigers for 14 years making 134 tries for the club side.
