Introduction

If we are to succeed in creating sporting habits for life we need evidence, insight and understanding.

Sport England have developed a number of tools using their research to help us understand why people play sport, what keeps them engaged, why they drop out and what does and doesn’t work in getting people playing more and better sport.

Their Active People Survey measures how many people participate, who they are, what sports they do, and how this varies across England. The latest release revealed that 15.5 million people now play sport at least once a week. Active People Survey data is used in Sport England's recently published Local Sport Profile Tool, which provides a detailed profile of each local authority, including data on sports participation, health, market segmentation, and facilities.

The ‘satisfaction with the quality of the sporting experience’ survey ( SQSE ), provides measurement and insight into the reason why people take part in sport and what impacts on their level of satisfaction. These things matter – as the better the quality of experience the more likely they are to keep playing.
