Benefits to you

Besides being fun, there are lots of benefits to playing sports and here are just a few:

  • Improves health by boosting the immune system and reduces the risk of developing ill health such as coronary heart disease and stroke.
  • Increases your strength and suppleness, and improving your stamina.
  • Reduces or maintaining your body weight and improving your body image.
  • Boosts your energy levels – the more active you are, the more you want to be active.
  • Improves your confidence and self-esteem and increases self discipline.
  • Improves your mood and reduces the chances of becoming depressed by decreasing your anxiety and stress levels.
  • Provides a way to socialise, have fun and make new friends and be part of a team.
  • Improves your general well being.
  • Learn something new - every sport can teach you something different eg: Baseball improves hand-eye co-ordination and football improves agility.
  • Find something which you could excel.

The government recommends that adults should aim to take 30 minutes of at least moderate intensity physical activity on at least five days a week, and children and young people should achieve 60 minutes every day.

Recent statistics suggest that seven out of ten adults don’t do enough physical activity but it’s never too late to start.  There are lots of ways you get become active and you'll find some ideas here.
