Introduction

Officials is the term used to identify those essential people who are involved in the laws of the sport, including umpiring/refereeing, scoring and managing competitions. There are rules and regulations to every competitive activity and without officials, games cannot take place, competitions and leagues cannot be run and records cannot be broken. Without the dedicated contributions of all of these individuals, sport would not run as smoothly, fairly and safely as it does.

Officials should blend seamlessly in to the game, going about their duty without drawing attention to themselves. This doesn’t always happen, think about Billy Bowden with his unorthodox cricket signals, or Swedish referee Martin Hansson missing Tierry Henry’s handball, both famous officials for different reasons. No one said officiating was an easy job  Imagine being the umpire to a John McEnroe onslaught, but someone has to do it or competition would not be able to go ahead.
