Who can support you

If you are volunteering within a Club there may be a Club Volunteer Coordinator whose role is to support volunteers. They should be able to give you advice about how the club runs, the requirements of your role, claiming expenses, committee meetings and social events. The Club Volunteer Coordinator will know what training you need to complete - either generic (eg safeguarding and protecting children or first aid) or sports specific if you are helping with coaching. If the Club does not have a Volunteer Coordinator ask the Committee who will help you with all this information.

Volunteering England an independent voluntary agency covers all aspects of volunteering.  Their aim is to support and increase the quality, quantity, impact and accessibility of volunteering throughout England and their work links research, policy innovation, good practice and grant making in the involvement of volunteers. This web site offers a range of resources for anyone who works with or manages volunteers as well as those who want to volunteer.

Running Sports is dedicated to providing support and improving skills for volunteers working in sport.  From quick online tips and tools, to fun and informative workshops go to www.runningsports.org.  Running Sports will help you get more from your volunteering experience.

Most District Council’s have sports development teams that use volunteers in their activity programmes and will support you in your volunteering. For more information look at their websites.

Help for your Club and your Young Volunteers

Does your club have young volunteers between the ages of 14 and 25? Do they get any recognition for their volunteering?

Claire Thorby, Leadership and Volunteering Projects Coordinator, is keen to visit clubs to talk to the committee or the young people about the best ways to develop young people as volunteers and to recognise their volunteering and the contribution it makes to your club.  They could join a recognition scheme such as Step into Sport or Vinvolved, set up a young leaders group or take a Sports Leaders course.

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough LIVING SPORT Young Volunteer of the Year, Paris-Rose Brixey (who has been shortlisted for the BBC East Young Volunteer of the Year) said “I enjoy the feeling of knowing that I have helped a performer in their sport even if it is a little help. It’s a good feeling to think that if you had not organised and helped run an event or training it might not have happened.” Paris was registered for the Step into Sport scheme through which she gained a Gold certificate for 200 hours.
