Volunteer stories

Alisa Carrol – Volunteer Coach in Zambia

‘ I am just coming out to the end of my degree in Sports Development with Coaching. I am planning to become a multi sports coach – coaching at after school clubs.

‘I have done some volunteering throughout my time at uni and last year I went to Zambia as a volunteer coaching at 2 schools for 6 weeks.

‘ I think that gaining the Step Into Sports Award helped me to gain a place on the Zambia Project and gave me the starting point to get involved in volunteering.

‘I will be looking to continue volunteering in the future.’

Siobhan Skinner – Sports Student and Athletics Coach

‘ My Step Into Sport experience helped in a number of ways, I gained many skills from my work and became a confident person, it also helped increase my interest into Sport in the community and even to consider looking into this area as a job in the future.’

Paris-Rose Brixey - Cambridgeshire & Peterborough and BBC East Young Volunteer of 2009

'As a volunteer, I helped coach younger players on specific skills and help them improve as a performer in their sport, develop their social skills e.g. communication. As a Step Into Sport volunteer and young leader I am a role model for younger players as I provide support and encouragement.

'I enjoy helping others achieve, you receive a lot of personal satisfaction when a team or single performer has progressed a skill or has practised something to show the next week at training.

'Volunteering has made me more mature and independent as I had to organise and set up sessions for up to 15 performers. As a result of my successful volunteering I was selected to attend the FA National Young Leaders Camp last year. It was a fantastic week and I recommend it to any young leader who has the opportunity to attend.'
