Equality in Sport
Though 'equality' is a term used often in sport, it can mean different things to different people. Not everyone is aware that the policies in their club/gym, or their treatment of their sporting colleagues is 'equal'. Research has shown that many sports have low levels of participation by women and girls, ethnic minority groups, disabled people and even young people. Equality within your own working environment, whether in a club, as a coach, or an individual, will depend on the environment and the sport etc. However, all organisations and professionals in sport, are bound by equality legislation.
Why should equality interest you? There are many advantages to implementing and using an equality policy: - Democracy eg. within a club and good practice in sport are standards we should all aspire to
- An increase in participation, club members, volunteers., coaches, officials and spectators to your sport
- Reduce any likelihood of litigation
- Increase the skills and knowledge of your staff and volunteers
- Increase the chances of successful funding
