How to get sporty
Playing sports is a great way to keep the weight off and the energy levels high - especially when you find something you really want to do.
A few things to consider on the road to getting sporty:
- What do you want from sport?
Is it getting fit? The competitive edge, or meeting new people? Sport offers all these things, plus a sense of achievement. You may even enjoy yourself...
If you haven't been active for a while, try walking. Going at a fast pace, or longer distances will build muscle tone and stamina.
Start slowly. Remember, there's no shame in being a beginner - everyone has to start somewhere. You'll learn good techniques from the start.
Many sports can be played by disabled and able-bodied people together, or separetly, with or without the use of adaptations. See our disability sports section.
Some costs are usually involved, and depending on the sport, initial outlay can be expensive. Many clubs do run taster sessions, so you can try before committing yourself.
