Mark Foster to carry flag at the opening ceremony 6 August 2008Mark
foster has been selected to be the flag-bearer of the union jack at the
Beijing Olympics opening ceremony on Friday. Mark will be the first
swimmer to carry the Union Jack at the Olympic Games since the 1964
Tokyo Games. This will be the fifth Games for Mark. The opening ceremony takes place on Friday 8 August at 8pm (1pm our time).
Louis Smith and Daniel Keatings arrive in Olympic Village 28 July 2008
Louis Smith and Daniel Keatings were amongst the first Gymnasts and Divers to move into the Olympic Village in Beijing. The athletes will be staying in one of the 96 apartment blocks which Team GB has been allocated. The village boosts a video arcade and a food hall the size of four football pitches, offering cuisine from all around the world. To help the athletes from Great Britain feel more at home Team GB has shipped in a red telephone box.
The Olympic Village will be the athlete’s home for four weeks.
Paralympics Handover Day 17 September 2008
Schools, colleges, local authorities and other places of learning in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have been planning special events to mark the Paralympic Games Handover ceremony, which is taking place in London. The day will officially mark the start of the build-up to the 2012 Paralympic Games and will allow the United Kingdom to invite the world to the 2012 Games. The day will offer the chance to start thinking about the values of the Paralympic Games.

Smith and Keating Named in Beijing Squad 13 June 2008Louis Smith and Daniel Keating have been selected as part of the gymnastics squad to represent Great Britain at the Beijing Olympic Games, after a extremely successful year. The two athletes are based at Huntingdon Olympic Gymnastics Club, and both are featured in our Hall of Fame.
Girls 4 Gold 11 June 2008
UK Sport and the English Institute of Sport have launched the latest
in a range of talent identification initiatives. It is called
‘Girls4Gold’ and invites girls between 17 and 25 years who have
competed at county level and above to apply in the aim of enhancing
Great Britain's talent pool. The initiative will introduce talented
sportswomen into cycling, canoeing, rowing, sailing, modern pentathlon
and the winter sport of bob skeleton.

23 May 2008: Completion of the Aquatics Centre and Olympic Stadium is put back 5 months.
22 May 2008: Construction of the Olympic Stadium in London begins 3 months ahead of schedule.
FA name Chief Olympics Adviser 13 May 2008
Stuart Pearce has been named the Chief Olympics Adviser for 2012 Olympic Games for the Football Association. Pearce will now travel tothe Beijing Olympic Games to reasearch the competition and accomodation.
Mancap Launch Campaign 7 May 2008
Mencap launch a new campaign to help elite athletes with a learning disability reach their potential in the 2012 Olympic Games, after highlighting a lack of funding at all levels.
Olympic Games Training Camps 3 March 2008
Training Camps4 facilities within Cambridgeshire have been recognised as potential hosts of ‘Pre Games Training Camps’.
 Cambridge University – Athletics, Archery and Fencing.
Anglia Ruskin University – Fencing.
Comberton Village College – Fencing and Judo.
King’s School, Ely – Archery.
The
training camps will offer Olympic and Paralympic athletes from across
the world facilities to train, prepare and experience what the UK can
offer prior to the games. The hosts will be finialised in August 2008.
UK School Games 29 March 2006
The government has launched a new project to find fresh new sporting talent ready for 2012. UK School Games will be fronted by the Youth Sport Trust on a local, regional and national stage. The School Games, like its adult counterpart, will have an opening and closing ceremony, an Olympic style village and medals to be won. The project will travel around the UK, with all cities having the opportunity to bid to host the Games.
