Olympics Handover Day Sunday 24 August 2008

Around Cambridgeshire and Peterborough special events have been planned to mark the handover of the Olympic Games from Beijing to London. The day will officially mark the start of the build-up to the 2012 Olympic Games and the start of the Cultural Olympiad and will allow the United Kingdom to invite the world to the 2012 Games.

The day will offer the chance to start thinking about the values of the Olympic Games.


The Events

Grafham Water

The county's Olympic flag will be launched at Grafham Water on Sunday 24 August. The County Council's Chairman Tony Orgee and Huntingdonshire District Council's Vice-Chairman Jeff Dutton will raise the flag simultaneously with other locations across the United Kingdom and shall coincide with the Olympic Games Closing Ceremony.

Cambridge City Council

A special fun inflatable session is being held at Parkside Swimming pool. The first 50 young people will gain free entry to the session.

On the day a new run route on Parkers Piece with new signage will be unvealed. The signs have been funded by Cambridge City Council and LIVING SPORT.

East Cambridgeshire District Council

A special event has been planned at the Paradise Sports Centre, Ely. The event will including a Football World Cup featuring local teams, including those from migrant communities. Taster sports and arts sessions will also be on offer throughout the day.

Peterborough District Council

On Monday 25 August 15 runners from 5 running clubs from around Peterborough will be running to the Embankment Athletics Stadium, each carrying one Olympic ring. At the stadium they will hand the rings to the Mayor of Peterborough who will arrange the rings into the Olympic ring formation. A specially commissioned Olympic flag will then be raised at 1.00pm.
