Paralympics Handover Day Wednesday 17 September 2008


Schools, colleges, local authorities and other places of learning around Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have been planning special events to mark the Paralympic Games Handover ceremony, which is taking place in London. The day will officially mark the start of the build-up to the 2012 Paralympic Games and will allow the United Kingdom to invite the world to the 2012 Games.

The day will offer the chance to start thinking about the values of the Paralympic Games.


The Events


South Cambs District Council and Cambridge City Council

South Cambs District Council and Cambridge City Council have organised a FREE celebration event at Chesterton Sports Centre, Cambridge entitled 'Best 8'. During the day there will be top-class coaching on offer in basketball, football, swimming, table Tennis, Tennis, Boccia, Sitting Volleyball, Athletics and Martial Arts. The event is open to adults and children aged 10 years and up who have a physical disability or sensory impairment. A range of disability specific clubs will be available on the day to offer information about the sports, training sessions and competition.

Spring Common School and Samuel Pepys School

Key stage 2 and 3 pupils from Spring Common School in Huntingdon and Samuel Pepys School in St. Neots will be competing in four different Paralympic sports at Spring Common School. Teams will be formed of pupils from each school to encourage cohesion between the two schools, in the hope of starting some link work between them.

The Castle School

The Young Ambassadors of The Cambridge School Sports Partnership Will be leading and delivering a Paralympic sports festival at The Castle School in Cambridge. All pupils will be taking part in activities.

Hinchingbrooke Sports College

Hinchingbrooke Sports College will be putting on seven Wheelchair Basketball coaching sessions for their pupils during the day. A special year 11 assembly themed around the Paralympics is also planned for the day, with guest speaker Patsy Coleman, ex Paralympics Swimming Coach.
