Marvin the Moose celebrates The Daily Mile with the children at Fen Drayton Primary School

Marvin the Moose, Cambridge United’s mascot, visited Fen Drayton Primary School on Thursday 26th September, to celebrate The Daily Mile with the children.  Marvin took a tour of the school with PE Coordinator, Vicky Hawkins, waving to say hi to each class.  Marvin then took part in The Daily Mile with each class giving his seal of approval with plenty of high fives!

Cambridge United’s Community Trust runs a number of educational opportunities for children in the county, particularly their AstraZeneca Active Science programme led by Community Liaison Officer, Simon Wall. Simon said of today’s celebration of physical activity:  ‘It is great to see the children clearly enjoying The Daily Mile, especially with Marvin the Moose!’

The Daily Mile, founded in 2012 by Scottish Headteacher Elaine Wyllie, sees children jog or run at their own pace for 15 minutes daily.  Its strength is the simplicity of the initiative, with children going straight from the classroom to the playground or field.  Since January the number of schools taking up The Daily Mile has nearly doubled to 69, as the benefits are being seen; children noticeably fitter, able to concentrate for longer and showing increased resilience.

Mrs Helen Cooper, Deputy Headteacher at the School, believes, ‘The Daily Mile improves the children’s attention, their focus and their mental health… they are ready to learn and of course, it is all to do with their fitness and their health.’

PE Coordinator, Mrs Vicky Hawkins, said of the visit, ‘we are so excited to have Marvin the Moose from Cambridge United here today, the children are very excited and it is a fantastic honour to have him with us!’
