Kim is World Champion again!
Kim Lumley, who lives in Somersham, Cambridgeshire, has just secured her second World Water Ski Racing Championship after she won four out of four rounds at the 16th World Championships in Belgium.
Robbie Llewellyn of skirace.net said; “the last race was nail biting as Kim had the lead but then fell, allowing Australian Lauryn Eagle to take the lead. There were just minutes to go when Lumley dug deep and powered through the treacherous conditions on the Albert Canal to take the chequered flag ahead of Eagle. It was a phenomenal display by the new World Champion and a great day for Britain”. Robbie added; “Kim is a phenomenal woman on water, but she is also the most delightful person off the water with a wonderful personality. Britain and the world couldn’t wish for a nicer World Champion”.
Just a week before the World Championships in Belgium, Kim was at Long Beach, California where she shattered the all-time Women's record by 5 minutes in the world famous Catalina Water Ski Race.
In a sport where a team of three is critical to success, Kim’s powerboat crew of Robert Manchett and Nico Bertels were elated after a gruelling training schedule finally paid off. Kim only began competing in 1996 and from 1997 she has represented Great Britain at every World Championship event. She follows in her father’s footsteps as Tom Lumley was a successful crew member in the very first World Water Ski Racing Championship in 1979.
As a result of her achievements, Kim has been honoured with the coveted General Lascelles Award and was previously nominated for the Sunday Times Sports Woman of the Year Champions Award. In 2005 she was named BBC Cambridgeshire Sports Personality of the Year. Kim, who has just left LIVING SPORT where she worked as a Netball Development officer for several years, now works for Netball East as the Cambridgeshire Netball Development Officer.
Wisbech Powerlifter Special Olympic Champion!
Congratulations to Powerlifter Tom Baty who has won two gold and two silver medals at the Special Olympics in Leicester and is also the overall Olympic Champion for his weight division. This is a fantastic achievement and a great moment for Tom, his family and all those that support him. His trainer thinks that the World Championships in Greece in a couple of years could see Tom becoming world champion if he keeps training hard, so there is more to come from Tom Baty!
