Ellen finds form after early defeat

Ellen Falkner and her England team-mates thrashed an Eastern Counties select squad 21-3 at Hopton-on-Sea as they launched their build-up to next year's Commonwealth Games.

The St Neots bowler suffered defeat in her opening game, a women's triples match with Natalie Melmore and Sian Gordon, as they lost 2-13, 9-8, 1-0 following a tie-break against Hannah Overton, Michelle Tansley and Louise Howlett.

But she had no problems in any of her three women's pair’s encounters.

Falkner and Melmore saw off Kate Barnard and Hannah McConnell 13-7, 16-1 before switching partners to team up with Jamie-Lea Winch to beat the same opponents 9-4, 10-4. She then linked up with Amy Monkhouse as they sent Barnard and McConnell to a 12-3, 7-6 defeat.

Cambridge & County bowler Chris Chapman and partner Colin Rumsby came close to causing two upsets for the Eastern Counties team as both their men's pairs games went to tie-breaks. They lost 5-8, 10-7, 1-0 to Sam Tolchard and Graham Shadwell and 8-9, 13-4, 1-0 to Mark Bantock and Rob Newman.
