National title for Brilliant Ben

Ben Jones, of Nene Valley Harriers, made up for English Schools disappointment by winning gold at the England Under 17 Championships in Bedford.

Jones was trailing Schools champion Ben Hopkins going over the final barrier but found enough to win by 0.11 seconds, with Cambridge and Coleridge athlete Ben Kelk securing the bronze.

Jones said, “Apart from Sheffield it’s been a really good year for me, not only individually but with the team doing well in the Southern Men’s League. Jones had only been defeated once in five outings in the Southern Men’s League campaign as Nene Valley recorded their highest position of fourth in Division One.

There were also silver medals for Peterborough Athletic Club duo Joel Grenfell and Max Everest.

Grenfell, English Schools long jump champion, produced a best leap of 6.32m  but could not prevent his first defeat in the event this year. Unbeaten Feron Sayers, who opted for the high jump at English Schools, leapt 6.59m and beat Grenfell’s PB of 6.54m.

Everest, winner of bronze in the 80m hurdles at the English Schools, went one better on this occasion running 11.24 in the final to secure silver.
