Special Olympics Bridleways Equestrian Special Team (S.O.B.E.S.T.) put in a fine display at the Special Olympics Eastern Region Equestrian competition and some of its members competed for the region at the National Summer Games.
S.O.B.E.S.T. are the Equestrian team that represents Cambridgeshire as part of S.O. North Cambs, which currently has five other active sports; Athletics, Gymnastics, Power Lifting, Ski-ing and Swimming.
The Eastern Regional competition, held at Grasslands Equestrian Centre on Sunday 13th September, was for level C and B riders where walking and walking/trotting are the requirements. All horses were provided by Grasslands and each rider entered Dressage and Trail Ride. S.O.B.E.S.T entered 11 of the 24 entries for the event and the results were as follows:
C2 - Walk Led:
- Katie Hubble riding Lady = Dressage - Gold, Trail Ride – Bronze
- Henrietta Sherbourne & Sunset = DR - Silver, TR - 4th place
- Anna Clarkson with Poppet = DR - Bronze, TR – Gold
- Sharni Crosby on Iionka = DR - 4th place, TR - Silver.
C1 - Walk & Trot led:
- Rebecca Smith riding Tinkerbell = DR - 4th place, TR – Bronze
- Naomi Bradford with Fozzy = DR - Silver, TR - Gold.
C1 - Walk & Trot unled (split into 2 classes):
- Kirsty Butcher riding Muffin = DR - Gold, TR – Bronze
- Jenny Wilson also riding Muffin = DR - Silver, TR – Silver
- Toby Hana with Sunset = DR - Silver, TR – Gold
- Kieron Harrison also on Sunset = DR - Bronze, TR - Gold
B1 Walk & Trot unled:
- James Rollo riding Lucky = DR - Gold, TR - Silver
The Special Olympics National Summer Games, taking place between July 25th and July 31st in Leicester on horses provided by Oakland College of the St Albans team, saw the Eastern Region team’s 4 S.O.B.E.S.T members collect the following results:
A1 Level: (Un-named rider) riding Minton DR - 5th place, Prix Caprilli - Bronze, HC&K - 6th place, Georgina Charnley on Tonto - DR - 4th place, Prix Caprilli - 4th place, HC&K - 5th place
B1 Level: Stephen Barry = DR on Blossom - Bronze, Trial Tide on Tonto - Gold, HC&K - 4th place
C1 Level: Jenny Wilson riding Bob = DR - Gold, TR - 5th place. Jenny competed at B2 level for HC&K and achieved 4th place.
The Eastern Region team as a whole won 9 Golds, 4 Silver and 11 Bronze medals.
S.O.B.E.S.T. train every Wednesday between 6 - 8pm at Grasslands E.C., Helpston, PE6 7DU. They have 14 rider members with ages ranging from 10 to 41. An A level Regional Competition is planned at St. Albans in December with S.O.B.E.S.T. having 2 A level riders.
