Year 7 students at The Netherhall School, Cambridge, got an early opportunity to develop their leadership skills at a Learn2Lead day held at the school. Working in their tutor groups, students undertook a number of different outdoor and team building activities. The activities included a bivi build, whistle in the trees activity, quicksand game and an orienteering course.
The event, organised by the Specialist Sports College team, aimed to introduce students to personal, learning and thinking skills (PLTS), a series of generic skills developed by QCA as essential to life, learning, and work.
Each Year 7 tutor group were awarded marks out of ten for five of the PLTS in each activity. The five areas were effective participation, creative thinking, independent enquiry, team work and self-management. The activities on offer reflected these and students were able to develop these skills throughout all activities. At the end of the activities students were able to reflect upon the activities and their own learning in each of the PLTS areas.
The Learn2Lead day was eventually won by Form 7R who amasses 158 points.
Associate Director of Specialism, Gary Crick said “The event enabled us to introduce the concept of personal, learning and thinking skills, through Leadership which is a strong element of our Specialist Sports College work. A significant number of our Year 7 intake has already been introduced to Sports Leadership through the Young Leaders Award in their primary schools and we are aiming to build on this and develop the PLTS skills in every child. We have an extensive Leadership pathway at Netherhall that extends from our partner primary schools through to Year 13 with students able to undertake a wide variety of qualifications in sport, dance and fitness. “
The Learn2Lead day will be followed by students looking at PLTS across other curriculum areas, whilst in PE, all Year 7 students will be working towards the Netherhall Leadership Award, a leadership qualification developed at Netherhall to prepare students in Years 7, 8 and 9 for future leadership qualifications such as the Level 1 Awards in Sports Leadership, Dance Leadership and Fitness Instructors delivered at the school.
