Louis Smith and Daniel Keatings both excelled in the Men’s qualifying yesterday at the Gymnastics World Championships held at London’s O2 Arena.
Huntingdon Olympic Club’s Smith claimed the third highest score to reach the pommel horse final after a stunning display, while Huntingdon and British team-mate Keatings sealed his place in the all-around final with another Britain Kristian Thomas also making the cut.
The Olympic bronze medallist, 20, only competed in the pommel horse but is one of the favourites for the title with the two men who beat him at the Beijing absent this week.
Meanwhile, 19 year old Keatings, Smith’s Huntingdon club-mate, qualified in a superb fourth with a score of 88.400 after recovering from an early error to reach tomorrow’s all-around final, where he placed an impressive 20th in the Olympic final in Beijing last year.
Keatings mistake on his dismount cost him as he failed to make the pommel horse final with Louis Smith, a discipline where he had an outside chance of a medal.
Huntingdon Club’s international female gymnast Marissa King competes in qualifying today, with an aim to also reaching the final, in her last competition before her scholarship starts in Florida.
Coach Paul Hall is the final representative of Huntingdon Olympic Gymnastics Club at the World Championships as he is helping the GB set-up.
