Peterborough lads roll for England

A number of Peterborough’s roller-hockey aces have recently impressed on international duty for England’s Under 17 and Under 20 squads.

Han Wei Lim was the Under 17s national captain, while Michael Carter, Richard Claxton, Nick Flint and goalkeeper Peter Hunt represented their country in a seventh place finish at the European Championships held in France.

England’s Under 17s avoided finishing bottom of the pile by defeating Switzerland, but performed better than their position suggested, with Wei particularly impressive as captain while the others all found the net.

Carter and Hunt have performed well in forcing their way into the under 17 squad at the age of 15. All the Peterborough contingent will look to next year’s Europeans held in Northampton, although the older three may be moved to the under 20 squad by then.

Another Roller Hockey Club representative was coach Arthur Corr, assistant coach of the under 17 set-up.

City clubmates Sergio Hutson and Sam Cayley also represented England as they competed in the World Under 20 Championships. For the under 20s at the World Championships, Hutson notched three goals in a rollercoaster campaign that saw England defeat South Africa 5-0 and Australia 10-2.

Peterborough Roller Hockey Club are keen to attract youngsters to the game. Arthur Corr, club coach with over 30 years experience and former England Ladies team boss, runs training sessions on Friday nights from 5.30pm.
