City of Peterborough Swimming Club (COPS) began their competitive season in style at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Pool.
The Robin Hood meet, hosted by Sherwood Colliery Swimming Club and the first long course event of the year, is early preparation for the East Region Winter Championships in November.
COPS had 46 swimmers at the meet and 204 new personal best long-course times were set among them, with 13 of those times going into the club record books.
Zara Bailey, 13, and 16 year-old Sophie Sweet lead the table of honours with five medal hauls. Bailey took gold in the 200m breaststroke and individual medley, silver in the 50m freestyle and bronze in the 400m freestyle and 100m butterfly.
Sweet also took two golds in the 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle and silver in the 200 individual medley, 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke events. Sweet’s freestyle silver also earned her a place in the record books.
Another club star, fifteen-year-old Liam Knight, took gold in the 100m backstroke and three silvers in the 200m individual medley, 200m breaststroke and 100m butterfly, setting four new club records. Newcomer Gaby Balls made her mark by taking gold and setting a new club record in the 50m breaststroke, while taking silver in the 100m breaststroke.
