Great Britain’s senior women secured a clean sweep in Kumite with podium domination at an international karate competition held at Gamlingay Village College. Michelle Payne won gold, Karina Whittington taking silver and Julia Pell bronze.
Egypt brought a strong team to the event, which featured more than 100 entrants, and took gold in the men's senior Kumite. Britain claimed another two medals in the sparring category, with Brian Holland and Kevin Course securing silver and bronze respectively.
The Egyptians dominated the senior competition in Kata with flawless performances.
Great Britain chief instructors Shane Balmer, John Hurley, Bill Hooper and Tom Barrett provided the competition’s judging. The tournament was organised with the intention of inspiring more youngsters to take up the sport, by Frank Nezhadpournia.
Cambridge’s Tommy Maguire has clinched a top mixed martial arts title in Kidderminster. The Tsunami Fight Gym trained fighter defeated defending champion Nigel Whitear to take the Anger Management welterweight crown in the first round.
Maguire received a hostile reception from his opponent’s home crowd, but was quick out of the blocks, rocking Whitear with a series of heavy shots before rolling him on to the ground. Maguire forced Whitear to submit just over a minute into the bout.
