Newport Free and Wisbech come out on top

The county round of the under-16 National Schools Hockey tournament took place last week and had plenty of excitement as Newport Free Grammar School and Wisbech Grammar School came out on top.

An exciting final was won by Newport Free Grammar School as two goals from Annie Evans gave them a 2-0 win over Wisbech Grammar School.

Cambridgeshire’s teams were divided into two pools of four with The Perse School for Girls and Kimbolton School dominating Pool A and the two eventual finalists lead Pool B.

In Pool A, both hosts Perse and Kimbolton enjoyed 1-0 wins over Saffron Walden County High School and King's School from Peterborough, and nothing could separate the sides when faced each other, with their match ending goalless and Kimbolton claiming victory through penalties to win the pool.

Pool B’s matchers were played at the Cambridge University Astroturf, with defending county champions Newport emerging as winners and Wisbech runners-up, after beating St Mary’s School 3-0 and Thomas Deacon Academy 4-0, following an opening draw with Wisbech. Wisbech drew with St Mary’s and beat Thomas Deacon.

In the semi-finals, Wisbech overcame Kimbolton 4-3 in penalties after a 1-1 draw, while Perse struggled as Newport took a 2-0 victory. Then Newport conquered Wisbech in the final as both qualified for the next round.

The under-18 tournament took place a week earlier, with Sally Whyte's solitary goal in the final enough to give The Leys School victory over Kimbolton, as both teams represent the East in November’s regional round.
