Huntingdon gym takes monumental medal haul

Huntingdon’s male gymnasts won a total 23 medals at the 2009 Men’s Artistic Gymnastics British Championships held at London’s Goresbrook Leisure Centre.

Daniel Keatings reclaimed the all-round title he won in 2007 with a score of 88.100, following on from his silver medal at the World Championships held in October, to cap another impressive year. Keatings medal haul did not stop there as he took golds on the floor, parallel bars and high bar, and silver on the pommel.

Club-mate Luke Folwell also shone in the senior competition as he secured the all-round bronze, while adding silver medals on the vault and parallel bars, and a bronze on the rings.

Louis Smith was back on form by winning pommel horse gold, showing faultless shape and rhythm.

Cameron Mackenzie secured bronze in the all-round competition of the under 18 category, while taking the top prize on the pommel horse and high bar, with silver on the parallel bars and bronze on the rings.

Sam Oldham, however, became the day’s most successful competitor by winning the all-round gold, the same feat on four apparatuses – pommel horse, high bar, vault and rings - and a further silver medal on the parallel bars in the under 16 category.

Huntingdon’s Max Bennett and Alex Brailsford, also in the under 16s, won floor gold and vault bronze respectively.
