McAleese wins on professional homecoming

Pat McAleese boxed to a comfortable victory over Darren Gethin in his homecoming professional show at Tattersalls in Newmarket.

In front of a 900-strong sell-out crowd, the unbeaten light-middleweight put in the best display of his career to see off the former British Masters and Midlands Area champion 60-55 on points.

McAleese, 23, took his time to get the measure of his opponent and made himself an awkward target with his supreme bobbing and weaving. The home favourite got into his stride midway through the second round with some testing jabs before moving up another gear in the third.

The Newmarket boxer continued his flourishing display through the rounds, with Gethin prepared to go toe-to-toe in the sixth and final round. This proved to be a wrong error judgement as a booming right from McAleese cut Gethin's left eye.

McAleese will be back in action in Norwich on December 12.

Fellow Newmarket boxer Matt Jack did not have as much joy as he lost 40-37 on points to Jamie Ambler, who had won just seven of his previous 43 fights.

Jack tried against the Welshman consistently caught by a jab in the super-middleweight clash, and this showed at the end as he did not approach the referee at the final bell.
