Ben Ewers led the way at the first Cambridge Schools Sports Partnership Year Five and Six Cross Country Championships held at Netherhall School in Cambridge.
The talented runner from Swaffham Prior crossed the line first in the A race over a challenging 1.5 kilometres course, where strong wind made conditions even tougher for the runners who had to negotiate some demanding hills along the route.
Second place was taken by Joseph Gargis from Kettlefields, with Solomon Bird following in third.
The B race, 500m shorter in distance, was won by Arbury's Sam Gilchrist, with teammate Ryan McMahon in second and Queen Edith's Luke Dell finishing third.
St Philip's School were the top performers in the A race of the team competition. Queen Edith were second and Kettlefields A third, while Queen Edith won the B race ahead of Kettlefields C and D.
Twelve schools were represented at the event. Organiser Gary Crick was delighted with the turnout and quality of performances, and he said, ‘The event was a real success and the kids really enjoyed it. We're looking to expand it next year.’
He continued to say, ‘It was quite windy, so it was quite challenging. There was some good competition and we could see there were a number of runners, who may well run for the district when they go into Year Seven next year.’
