BBC East Sports Awards 2009

This year's awards night, one of the biggest nights out in the region's sporting diary, will be held at Tattersalls in Newmarket this evening (8th December).

Last year, Paula Radcliffe was the guest star, and this time it's racing legend Frankie Dettori.

As well as the awards, there will be music and displays in one of the most famous sporting arenas in the world - Tattersalls' iconic Sale Ring at a very special night hosted by Look East presenter Stewart White.

It's been another year of titles, trophies and medals for our clubs and competitors in the East.

It was a great year for Cambridgeshire with snooker player Neil Robertson winning the World Masters, Kim Lumley became World Water Ski Racing Champion, Paul Bonhomme being crowned World Air Racing Champion, while cyclist Jody Cundy became World Champions.

To top that, Louis Smith and Daniel Keatings won silver at the European Gymnastics Championships, and Daniel went on to make history by winning silver at the World Championships in October. Cricketer Charlotte Edwards has also had an impressive year leading England women to Ashes, World Cup and Twenty20 success.

The LIVING SPORT Sports Awards for Cambridgeshire saw Edwards rewarded as Sports Performer of the Year, with Cambridge and Coleridge’s Charlotte Cox collecting the Disabled Sports Performer, while Gareth Furlong and Paris-Rose Brixey were recognised with the Young Sports Performer and Young Community Volunteer awards respectively.

Cambridge Cangaroos were Club of the Year, with the School award going to Hinchingbrooke School in Huntingdon. Michael Dimambro was recognised for his dedication and commitment to sport with the Services to Sport gong, with the County Disability Sports Forum achieving the newly introduced accolade the Matthew Warn Power of Sport, for their community work throughout 2009.

A special mention must go to Cambridge Dive Team’s Head Coach Sam Buck, winner of the Coach of the Year award, who has been shortlisted as Young Coach of the Year at the 2009 UK Coaching Awards held at Old Billingsgate in London this evening.
