Sawtry swimmer Lauren Steadman swam a new personal best in the third leg of the 4x100m freestyle relay as Great Britain stormed to gold in world record time at the IPC World Championships held in Rio.
GB recorded a time of 4.26.20 as they raced to victory ahead of nearest challengers United States and Australia. The team was compromised of the same members that secured gold at the European Championships in European record time last month, with Stephanie Millward, Eleanor Simmonds and Louise Watkins joining Steadman.
The relay victory was one of five gold medals won by GB on the same day. This took the team’s total 18 golds at the Worlds to finish in fifth place behind Russia, Australia, USA and Brazil.
The 16 year old also reached the individual finals in the 50m and 100m finishing eighth and seventh respectively, with a personal best set in the 100m.
Huntingdon Piranhas’ Steadman is hoping to attract sponsorship in the build-up to the 2012 Paralympics. If anyone is interested they can contact her mum Sharon at a.steadman@virgin.net or by telephone on 07775 612173.
