The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) have designed an Inclusive Club Health check and received funding to support the development of an Advocacy and Activity Buddy Scheme (AABS).
The Inclusive Club Health check is designed for all sports clubs to use to both assess how inclusive they really are, and to set some targets towards inclusion for disabled people.
A poll on the EFDS website (www.efds.co.uk) shows that 38% of people believe a lack of suitable clubs is the main barrier to participation for disabled people. This is followed by 28% who believe that a lack of information is the main reason.
The Inclusive Club Health check, which can be downloaded for the EFDS website, aims to solve these issues, and covers the following seven areas; Communication and Community Engagement, Policy and Procedures, Staff and Volunteers, Club management and marketing, club facilities, playing programme, resources and evaluation.
The AABS project aims to increase the participation of disabled people within sport or physical activity. AABS has developed a number of resources and training tools, which are available free of charge, to enable such facilities to recruit and train volunteers.
The training includes disability awareness training and is available as a paper based resource, a power point workshop and through an online training website - http://aabstraining.efds.co.uk.
