Perse School held their nerve in a tense final to successfully defend their National Indoor Hockey under 18 title at the Trent FM Arena in Nottingham.
Perse defeated Ipswich School for the second time in as many years with a 3 – 2 victory, withstanding a fierce challenge from their determined opponents.
England under 18 international Michael Franklin stepped up to hit a penalty flick into the net to give Perse the lead. Ipswich made Perse pay for not converting a succession of penalty corners with an equaliser late in the half to ensure the scores were tied 1 – 1 at half time.
The Cambridge School weathered an early second half storm, before Ben Creese and Hugo Christie put them into a 3 – 1 lead. Ipswich then desperately searched for a way back into the match and got their answer when pulling a goal back with three minutes remaining.
A nervy climax saw Perse put under extreme pressure, but the defence held on to record a memorable victory.
