Peacock invited to Paralympic World Cup

Teenage sprint star Jonnie Peacock has been invited to run the 100m at the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester in May, a chance to line-up against a legend – South Africa’s Oscar Pistorious.

It is the latest step in a meteoric rise for Cambridge Regional College student Peacock, one which he hopes will climax with a spot alongside Pistorius at the Games in London 2012 and Rio 2016.

16 year old Peacock’s current best time is 12.84sec, but he aims to get it under 12.2sec, allowing him to go through to the IPC World Championships in New Zealand in 2011.

That would still leave him some way behind Pistorius, dubbed the Blade Runner, whose best is 10.91sec and who has taken part in able-bodied competition.

The Chatteris star started sprinting after shining at a talent identification day less than 18 months ago, where he was asked if he wanted to join the training programme for six months. Through the programme, he was set up with Cambridge-based coach Hayley Ginn.
