Leader Williams looking for skeleton gold

Cambridge-born Amy Williams will have Britain's first individual Winter Olympics gold in 20 years in her sights when the women's skeleton competition resumes in Whistler tonight.

The 27 year old set out fifth and recorded a stunning track best of 53.83sec on her first run and held her advantage on the second slide to take a 0.30sec lead over Germany's Kerstin Szymkowiak into the final day, with favourite and world ranked number one Mellisa Hollingsworth in third.

Williams was the only female to record a time under 54sec, while GB teammate Rudman struggled with finding her line on the track and ended the first two runs in seventh. The Turin 2006 silver medallist was off the pace in 11th after her first run, but moved up the board with a second run of 54.26sec.

In the men's skeleton, Rudman's fiance Kristan Bromley was in fifth place after the opening two runs with a time of 1:45.80, giving him a chance to be in medal contention on Friday.

Latvian Martins Dukurs led with 1:44.91 and Bromley's team-mate Adam Pengilly was lying in 20th place with a time of 1:47.92 for his two runs.
