Even a snowy start to Wednesday 10th February 2010, couldn’t stop over 450 boys and girls taking part in the first ever Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Emerging Schools Rugby finals.
The event, held at Ely RFC, saw Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils from schools all over the county competing in their respective age groups to be crowned the best in the county. 2010 is the first year the tournament has taken its current shape, where the top two schools qualify from the each of the district finals.
The tournament is the fruition of work that is being put in by Youth Sports Trust, National Governing Bodies of sport and Schools to align the pathways of sport from local level to national, whilst raising the quality and profile of school sport and competition.
St Bedes School were the winners of the Yr 7 Boys’ Trophy, whilst Thomas Deacon Academy won the Yr 7 Boys’ Shield. Sawtry Community College picked up the Yr 8 Boys’ Trophy and Comberton Village College the respective Shield. Hinchingbrooke School were crowned the Yr 9 Boys’ Shield winners.
The U13 Girls’ competition saw Thomas Deacon Academy squeeze by Ormiston-Bushfield Academy and Cambs U13 Girls to come out on top.
All of the winners of the Shield and Trophy competitions and all 3 girls teams will progress on to both the Eastern Counties and Regional finals being held on 11th and 26th March respectively.
Senior Competition Manager for Cambridgeshire & Peterborough and organiser of the county finals, Jennifer Sothmann said, “It has been such a great day, with so many schools and pupils having the opportunity to participate with the potential to represent the county at the next 2 rounds. Thanks must be given to the schools for their help and support, to Ely RFC for hosting the event and to the RFU.”
