Cambridgeshire Bowls round-up

Some of Cambridgeshire top players have been in Bowls action these past few weeks, with more to come in March.

Cambridgeshire beat Bedfordshire 33-3 in their penultimate match to stay on course for the Eastern Counties Carpet Bowls League title. Rivals Suffolk left a narrow five point advantage for Cambs at the top with a 28-8 win over Hertfordshire.

Ellen Falkner provided a last-gasp winning bowl to secure victory for England at the Moama International against hosts Australia. The City of Ely player partnered Natalie Melmore in a 2-1 set win with England 3-1 down overall, and a final win for England’s men saw the scores level but team victory on countback.

37 year old Nicky Brett, 2010 English Indoor Champion of Champions and part of the winning mixed fours at the English Indoors, produced a magnificent start for City of Ely in their 97-82 semi-final win over North Walsham in the Egham Trophy. Ely will meet Torquay United in the final at Desborough on 7th March.

City of Ely’s Sara Matthews and Ellen Falkner will be on the hunt for a hat-trick of titles at the English Indoor Championships. The duo will compete in the fours and triples their clubmates, while Matthews also goes in the pairs while Falkner begins her singles campaign.

Chesterton bowler Mick Langley will be competing in the Men’s over 60s singles, while Huntingdon’s John McKee and Brian Brett battle in the Men’s over 60s pairs.
