Cambridge District’s St Bedes School and Chesterton Community College were the winners of the Under 14 and Under 16 County Basketball Finals respectively.
Each competition included four schools representing the districts of Cambridge, Huntingdonshire, Peterborough and the Isle of Ely.
Competition structures are being aligned with the National Competition Framework, providing pathways from local to national competitions, raising the awareness of school sport and competition.
St Peters School was the venue for the U16 Boys County Finals on Monday 22nd February, where Chesterton came past a battling Thomas Deacon Academy 58-21 in the final.
Peterborough’s Thomas Deacon began the competition against Hunts Districts’ St Neots, securing a 37-21 win after an even first half. Chesterton played Thomas Clarkson Community College in the other semi-final, storming to a 75-8 victory, before winning the title against Thomas Deacon.
Ormiston Bushfield Academy played host to the U14 Boys and Girls County Finals on Friday 26th February.
In the Girls competition, St Bedes defeated Witchford College 17-7 in the first semi-final, while Hinchingbrooke hosted Bushfield in the other semi-final which ended with a dramatic lay up in the last second giving the hosts a 7-6 victory. St Bedes claimed the title with a comfortable 24-2 win in the final.
In the U14 Boys finals, St Bedes again proved too strong for their opponents. The Cambridge School defeated Thomas Clarkson 49-6 in semi-final one, Hampton College securing their final place with a 27-9 win against Abbey College. St Bedes then showed their strength by beating Hampton 24-11 in the final.
Crowned both the U14 Boys and Girls County Champions, St Bedes have been invited to represent Cambridgeshire and Peterborough at the Regional Finals later in the year, while Chesterton will represent the county in the U16 Boys Regional Finals.
Competition Manager for Cambridge and South Cambs School Sport Partnerships and event organiser, James Cook, said, ‘The county finals have been fantastic events. Congratulations to all 12 teams for reaching the County Finals and representing their district.
