City of Ely on course for national double

City of Ely Bowls Club completed the first half of the national double target after beating Torquay United 89-43 to win the Egham Trophy for the third time in their history at Desborough.

World champion Greg Harlow and his rink featuring wife Kay, captain Sue Alexander and Ian Brown raced into a 10-1 lead and it was an advantage they eventually hammered home to take a decisive 30-4 win.

An inspiring shot by Harlow to drive the jack into the ditch to take two shots when their opponents were set to pick up six fired the rest of the team, just as Torquay were settling into game.

Reynolds and Easy both picked up big points soon after as their teams pulled away while Brett managed to contain the threat of Sam Tolchard, after close affairs early on.

Torquay conceded with three ends left to play, with Ely holding a 46-shot advantage, to see the local club win the Egham Trophy for the third time. Ely's men's team will hope to follow up this success later this month after reaching the last four of the Denny Cup.
