Records galore as Hunts AC begin season

In his opening competition of the season at the County Throws Development Meet in Cambridge, Jonathan Edwards continued where he left off last year by winning his hammer throw event and setting a new club record in the process.

Edwards, in his first year as an Under 20, added a whopping eight metres to his personal best and over five metres to the club record of 44.20 metres set in 1987. Edwards’ distance of 49.37m places him at the top of the national rankings and comfortably exceeds the English Schools Championships qualifying mark.

Not satisfied with just one victory, Edwards claimed wins in both the shot put with 12.29m and the discus with 38.25m. On the strength of this showing, Edwards is set to enjoy a high-calibre athletics season. Martin Safford also gained a victory on the day when he won the veterans javelin with 32.62m.

The three-strong Smith family made the journey across to Corby to compete in an open track & field meet, with sisters Eleanor and Polly both establishing new Huntingdonshire AC club records.

Polly set the Under 13 Girls 1,000m record when winning in 4:10.0 while her 14-year-old sister Eleanor claimed the Under 17, Under 20 and Senior Women’s club records when finishing as runner up in the 2,000m with a time of 7:56.2. Eleanor also placed 2nd in the 1,000m in 3:45.6, while nine-year-old brother Barnaby made his club debut, placing 5th in the Under 11 600m in 3:02.7.

Three Hunts AC runners took part in the Silverstone Half Marathon with great success. Shane Hunt finished 48th in 85:19, Sean Barker 51st in 85:26, and Barry Wild 72nd in 87:10. Shane enjoyed further acclaim by placing second in the M50 age category, while Sean Barker achieved a top ten finish in the M40 section.

Four young athletes took the trip to Cofton Park near Birmingham as County representatives in the UK Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships. Competing against the country’s very best, all acquitted themselves with distinction, and in particular Emma Butcher, 17, who finished in the top half of the field.
