Stars from Ely of City Bowls Club received mixed fortunes as the Men’s squad suffered a narrow 81-80 defeat to Cumbria in the Denny Cup final, while Ellen Falkner and Sarah Seymour helped England clinch the British Isles Women’s International Series.
Club stars Nicky Brett, Greg Harlow and Jamie Reynolds were instrumental in keeping Ely in touch with Cumbria after they took a 20-shot advantage following a narrow opening to the match.
Andrew Easy’s quartet were then two shots behind going into the final end of their match with the scores level 80-80, and he drove the jack off with the final bowl to send the game into an extra end. From here, brilliant play by Cumbria succumbed Ely to the last-gasp defeat.
The defeat prevented the club from double triumph after winning the Egham Trophy earlier in the month against Torquay United, but a second final in 2010 as shown the strength of the Ely club’s squad after defeating Bristol 94-64 in the semis to secure their Denny Cup final position.
Ellen Falkner was integral in England’s 132-97 win over Wales last week, and was again displaying brilliant bowls as her foursome claimed victories in their games against Ireland and Scotland. Sarah Seymour also produced impressive displays in her games, with her quartet winning and losing once.
England’s women claimed a 138-90 win over Ireland and defeated hosts Scotland 126-94 to claim the series honours.
