Sibson and Freeman make it a double

The Isle of Ely Rowing Club and The King’s School joined forces at the Cambridge Champs Junior Sculling Head at the weekend, coming away from the event with a clutch of medals and more victories to add to recent successes.

Laura Sibson, representing the King’s School, and Nell Freeman, representing the Isle of Ely Rowing Club, raced and won twice, first in the WJ14 double sculls category and then again with crew mates Phoebe Bradbury (King’s) and Libby Milne (Isle of Ely) in the WJ14 coxed quad category.

The girls won both events emphatically, beating their nearest double sculling rivals from Rob Roy by 25 seconds and their nearest quad rivals from Leicester Rowing Club by 34 seconds.

‘We’re delighted with our two wins today,’ said Sibson, sporting her two winners’ medals. ‘Although Nell and I have been competing together in our quad for a few months, we’ve never raced as a double before, so this win is especially pleasing.’

The WJ14 coxed quad completed the course in an impressive time of 6 minutes and 43 seconds, which was not only the fastest time for their age group but also faster than the winning crews in the WJ15 and the WJ16 coxed quad events.

This Ely quad of Freeman, Sibson, Bradbury and Milne, coxed by Ellen Bridges, is the crew that will be representing the East of England at the Inter Regional finals at Nottingham on 25th April.

In the WJ18 coxed quad event, the Isle of Ely Rowing Club notched up another win. Not only did the WJ 18 coxed quad of Anna Towriss, Emma Pencheon, Stef Boughey and Jenny Kingsmill record the fastest time for their category of 6 minutes and 32 seconds, they also beat all the coxless WJ18 quads too, thus winning the WJ18 quad category overall and richly deserving their winners’ medals.

Isle of Ely Rowing Club member and King’s School student Ellen Bridges also came away with two wins, having coxed both the WJ14 and the WJ18 quads.
