Smith wins National title on third attempt

Alfie Smith has made it third time lucky after clinching the NACYP Championships title at Catterick.

The All Comers ABC boxer had to settle for silver after reaching the finals of both the NACYP and Junior ABA Championships last season.

Smith, who recently had trials for the England junior squad, came good this time with an impressive 9-4 win on points over Sam Osman to take the Under 63kg crown. Sheffield Unity ABC’s Osman is a much taller opponent which required Smith to use his deceptive skill to do the job

Smith now as his sights set on how far he can progress in the Junior ABAs having already booked his place in the quarter-finals later this month by recently winning the Eastern Counties title.

The Littleport club have arranged a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the New York gym of five-weight former world champion Oscar de la Hoya in May, which would clash with Smith's efforts in the competition.
