Smith claims silver while Keatings takes gold

Peterborough star Louis Smith had to settle with a silver medal at the European Gymnastics Championships in Birmingham this weekend.

The pommel horse bronze medalist had hoped for gold after taking the runners up spot in Milan last year, but was beaten to the spot by GB rival Daniel Keatings.

The world’s silver medalist Keatings delivered a faultless display and took advantage of Smith’s early mistake in his routine to beat his Hunts club teammate into second place.

In an echo of his performance at the World Championships last year Smith, who qualified in first place for yesterday’s final, almost fell at one stage but managed to recover with a score of 15.375.

With 2009 champion Krisztian Berki not making the final this mistake gave Keatings his chance and he got a score of 15.600 points this was enough to make him Brittan’s first ever men’s European Gymnastics champion.
