A small contingent of Huntingdonshire AC athletes travelled to Peterborough to compete in the opening match of the Eastern Young Athletes League, producing some outstanding results throughout the day.
In the Under 13 Girls section, Emily George showed excellent versatility in her first-ever competition for the club with wins in both the long jump and the shot put.
In the Under 15 Girls category, Katie Scholey’s hard winter’s training paid off handsomely as she slashed five seconds from her 800m personal best with a 2:31.0 clocking. She later followed that up with a huge personal best in the long jump, winning the B string event and improving by almost one foot.
In the Under 17 Women’s sprints, Lily Seach had exceptional races when she just missed out on the club 300m record by less than a quarter of a second and then ran to victory in the 200m, while in the Under 13 Boys age group, Daniel Harris started his athletics career with a win the the B string shot putt.
After missing practically the whole 2008 season, 16 year old Jordan Gillbanks returned with superbly. He started off by winning the Under 17 Men’s long jump and adding almost three feet to his personal best.
Gillbanks ran away from the field to record 51.9 secs in the 400m later in the day, and has only beaten once before in the discipline when he ran 51.53 to win a bronze medal at the English Schools Championships in 2007.
George Allen provided excellent back up to Jordan by not only winning the B strings of the long jump and 400m but also setting personal bests in both.
