Cambs Road League champion Paul Halford beat clubmate John Herbert and broke the Werrington Joggers marathon club record on Sunday (25th April).
The 36 year old produced the race of his life to finish 74th out of more than 36,000 finishers in the London Marathon, crossing the line in 2.31.59, and improving his personal best by 14 minutes with a superbly-judged race.
In-form Herbert was expected to end the race as club record-holder only to finish as the second Werrington runner on the day. Halford caught him at 21 miles and then ran a minute per mile quicker than his clubmate.
Halford lost his 10k club record to John Herbert earlier this year, so was not expecting to finish the marathon as club record-holder. It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Herbert, as despite being disappointed with his run after not breaking 2.30, he still broke Allan Haines’ veteran club record.
Herbert is confident he will regain the record in London next year, and having taken 10 minutes off his personal best, he is now seeking to reduce it by a further 12 minutes to get down to 2.25. Halford hopes he may shave a bit more off his time and get below the magical 2.30 barrier in 12 months time.
