After finishing last in every Eastern Veteran League match last year, the Huntingdonshire AC veterans track & field team moved up a notch with a 3rd place for the men and a 4th place for the women in the opening match of the season at Bedford.
The men’s team had great success with five individual victories. In the M40 age group, Peter Downhill held on for a close win in the 100m while Richard Phelan took the high jump with a fine 1.53m.
In the M50 section, Geoff Brewster cruised to an emphatic win in the 1500m, leaving his opponents almost half a minute in his wake, while Shane Hunt established a club record in the 2000m Walk. In the M60 category, William Bradley won the 400m by over six seconds and also picked up a comfortable win in the long jump.
On the women’s side, Sue Cahill set new personal bests in the shot putt and hammer throw before unfortunately pulling a hamstring in the 100m. As partial compensation, her hammer distance set a new club Veterans record.
Sandra Pedley, new to the sport this year, knocked nine seconds off her 400m best and also set new personal figures for the high jump and the 80m hurdles, the latter a club Veterans record.
Karen Johnson, another newcomer to Veteran athletics, ran a gutsy 400m to gain second place and set her new best time. Like Shane Hunt, Carol Darnell entered new territory by establishing the club record in the 2,000m Walk.
